Chris Matthews just wondered aloud how in the world anyone could say, even by mistake, that he fought in a war when he did not. And I think he’s correct to isolate the issue here. It’s not about whether Blumenthal served — it’s about the fact that he would lie in order to make himself look better, even if it meant dishonoring real Vietnam veterans.
Blumenthal’s defensive reaction to the New York Times story says a lot about his character. I would contrast it with the news that Rep. Mark Souder, R-Ind., is about to resign over his hypocritical sexual behavior. I half expected to see Blumenthal resign as AG today, but I overestimated him.
