On the heels of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s promise Tuesday that the United States should find ways of supporting the Libyan opposition, strongman Moammar Gadhafi’s forces took the last stronghold west of Tripoli.
“We understand the urgency of this,” Clinton said earlier in the day,
speaking at a press conference during a visit to Cairo. “We are upping our humanitarian assistance. We are looking for ways to support the opposition.”
A member of the Libyan opposition told The Examiner, “We have been waiting for help but none has come — maybe it will be to be too late for us when they finally decide what to do.”
The Associated Press reported that Gadhafi’s forces captured the last
rebel-held town after heavy tank and artillery fire.
The victory in Zwara, about 30 miles from the Tunisian border, solidifies Gadhafi’s hold in the west and reversed gains made by rebels in several cities early in the uprising, the Associated Press reported.
