Texas Gov. Rick Perry isn’t ready to put to rest the question of whether Mitt Romney knowingly hired illegal immigrants to tend his lawn in Massachusetts.
Perry released an ad Thursday criticizing Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, for failing to fire his lawn care company after the Boston Globe reported in 2006 that the company employed illegal immigrants.
Perry initially brought up the issue at the CNN Republican debate on Tuesday, but the debate audience rejected its relevancy with enthusiastic boos.
That didn’t stop the Perry campaign from blasting out an email later that night revisiting Romney’s lawn care history. And now this issue is central to Perry’s newest ad, titled “Mitt Romney: Misleading.”
Perry would be better off dropping the issue, if the CNN debate audience’s reaction is any indication of how it will play out nationally.
But Perry is at a disadvantage when it comes to airing his primary challenger’s dirty laundry. Having essentially run for national office for the last five years, Romney has had a chance to responsd to would-be controversies, like the health care reforms he helped implement.
