Defense Department spokesman Geoff Morrell told reporters Tuesday that officials are still in the process of putting together a plan for the military if the government shuts down on Friday. He would not elaborate as to whether U.S. troops will continue to receive paychecks if that happens.
“It is still something we are working through right now,” he said.
The Pentagon is preparing contingency plans that will be used if the government deadlocks and all decisions would be made by Friday, Morrell said.
The Pentagon “would retain the ability and authority to continue our military operations around the world,” which include Afghanistan, Japan and Iraq.
“We are at a sensitive point in the budget negotiations,” he said.
