Mike McCurry has always been at the top. He was Bill Clinton’s State Department spokesman, then his White House spokesman and now serves at a partner at the prominent Public Strategies Washington government relations firm. Oh, and he’s also the co-chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates.
But he has an even higher calling. “I’m cramming a master’s degree in theology into my spare time,” he tells us. McCurry hopes to graduate from Wesley Theological Seminary near American University this spring. But, he adds, his goal is not to preach, though he is a lay leader at his church. “No, I’m not aiming to get ordained because it turns out God has standards for things like that. I’m in the atonement mode for my time in politics.”
Instead, the Democrat is eager to bridge the gap between politics and religion, working with the school on a new program that he says is “aimed at Capitol Hill aides and federal workers who want to explore how faith and politics intersect.”
