Mitt Romney said Tuesday that if the Supreme Court overturns the health care law then “the first three and a half years of this president’s term will have been wasted on something that has not helped the American people.”
The Supreme Court is scheduled to rule on the constitutionality of the health care law Thursday.
If the Court upholds the law, “then I’ll tell you one thing,” Romney told a crowd of supporters in Salem, Va., “We’re going to have to have a [new] president and I am that one that’s going to get rid of Obamacare and we’re going to stop it on day one.”
Romney said the Supreme Court’s rulings this week represent the failures of Obama.
“This is a busy week for the Supreme Court,” Romney said. “I think their work highlights the leadership failures of our president.”
Romney appeared to be referring to the Court’s decision on Monday to strike down three out of four provisions of an Arizona measure that gave police greater powers in enforcing immigration law.
Republicans who support greater enforcement powers as well as Democrats who oppose the law claimed victory in the ruling.
Romney did not directly address the Court’s decision on the immigration law, though he criticized Obama for not delivering on his 2008 campaign promise to reform the immigration system.
“He failed to do what he said he would do,” Romney said. “And so instead of focusing on immigration and of course on the big issue, which was the economy and getting the economy going, he instead focused on putting in place his health care reform.”
