Despite a statement Wednesday that he expected to run, Michigan Democrat Rep. Bart Stupak is bowing out after nine terms in office.
Stupak earned the enmity of the Left and Right for holding up the president’s health care program with concerns about subsidies for elective abortions and then caving in at the end.
Democrats may benefit if they can find a solid nominee late in the game, but for tea partiers, who have been protesting in Stupak’s Upper Peninsula district this week, this represents a very big win.
