Department of Homeland Security officials announced this week that U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) thwarted an attempt to bring “potentially unsafe toy water guns” into the country through the port of New York & New Jersey.
“CBP, in partnership with [the Consumer Product Safety Commission], stand together to protect the American public from imported products that may cause serious health and safety issues,” Robert E. Perez, Director, Field Operations New York, said in a statement on the seizure.
“The toy water guns and action figures contained an excessive amount of lead, which violates the Federal Hazardous Substances Act,” DHS explained. “CBP seized approximately 200 cartons with an approximate domestic value of $35,000.00.”
Last fall, DHS prevented 13,000 “potentially dangerous hair dryers” from entering the country through the ports of Los Angeles and Miami.
