Callista tries to humanize herself and Newt

Callista Gingrich seemed tense, initially, during her first public address on the presidential campaign trail, but she focused on personal anecdotes about herself and Newt Gingrich in an apparent attempt to humanize them both before he took the stage at CPAC 2012.

“Because I know Newt better than most, I’m pleased to introduce him today,” Mrs. Gingrich said, before listing three things she thought the audience might not know about her husband. “Newt is an enthusiastic and committed golfer: he gets in and out of more sandtraps than anyone I have ever seen,”she said, before noting as well that he “loves reading” and has an entire library’s worth of books on his Kindle.

Her third point about Gingrich underscored their family life and seemed, implicitly, to address the criticisms of him that derived from his divorces. “Newt is also very supportive,” she said, explaining that whenever she sings in public or performs her french horn, “he is always there listening.”

Callista Gingrich also thanked supporters for their “heartfelt prayers” in response to “hurtful attacks from some of our opponents” and the press. “You have made our lives richer and our campaign stronger,” she said.
