Superman, DC Comics’s legendary character, was in the news last week for multiple reasons. One was that DC Comics decided to change his well-known mantra of “truth, justice, and the American Way” to “truth, justice, and a better tomorrow.” This slight is just the latest anti-American attack in the culture war against our country. Many of those in the comic book industry are devout leftists who harbor resentment and hatred for America, which is why they have changed arguably the greatest comic book character into a stout globalist.
Speaking at the company’s virtual DC FanDome event on Saturday, chief creative officer Jim Lee stated that the mantra switch represents a more global vision for the universe of the legendary comic book character.
“To better reflect the storylines that we are telling across DC and to honor Superman’s incredible legacy over 80 years of building a better world, Superman’s motto is evolving,” Lee said.
But the motto is not evolving — it is regressing with a subliminal criticism of America. While Superman defends the entire world, his roots — well, his Earth roots, anyway — were in the United States. Raised on a farm in a small town in Kansas, Superman, whose secret identity is Clark Kent, was as American as apple pie. His strength and desire to protect all of humanity was always a metaphor for the U.S. and its history of protecting the world from evil. This is an American value, not a globalist one.
Furthermore, “a better tomorrow” and “building a better world” are all core tenets of the American way, and not necessarily part of the ethos of other countries. But leftists like to embrace their inner anti-American and, ultimately, that is what this slogan change is about, even though DC will not admit it publicly. This change is indicative of the leftists’ support of the globalist elite.
Truthfully, they have shrewdly been incorporating this change for a while. In the most recent movies involving Superman, the phrase “American way” was not mentioned. In Superman Returns (2006), Daily Planet editor Perry White asks whether Superman still stood for “truth, justice, all that other stuff,” carefully omitting “American way.” Moreover, in the Superman movies starring Christopher Reeves as the titular character, he was frequently seen with the U.S. flag or other patriotic imagery. Such imagery is almost extinct in the 21st-century version of the character.
It should speak volumes of the toxicity of the Left that they have such disdain for the U.S. and “the American way.” This is the result of years of indoctrination and half-truths about history in education. Even as people of all races and ethnicities from all around the world are constantly trying to enter this country, even risking their lives to do so, leftists continually emphasize how awful it is here. Our own country’s leftists reside in their echo chamber of hate and divisiveness, searching for “a better tomorrow” that the people of the world know is not possible without the “American way.”
That’s why protesters in Hong Kong were waving American flags instead of those of mainland China. It is why American values, not globalist values, are cherished around the globe.
The truth is that there is no better tomorrow without the American way. Our country’s cherished ideas of liberty and freedom are the beacon of hope that the world needs. Sure, the country has its sins, but so does every country and tribe that ever existed. The difference is that the “American way” is self-reflective. It involved identifying these sins and changing our ways. These struggles pave the way for a better world, a better humanity, a better civilization that would ultimately result in making tomorrow a better place for everyone. It has been tough, it has been messy, but it has resulted in the freest society the world has ever seen, and an ever “more perfect union,” even if it isn’t quite perfect yet.
