What is Mitt Romney up to? Is he just going to watch as Texas Governor Rick Perry eats his lunch in the polls?
A new column by Marc A. Thiessen explains that the Romney campaign is waiting to see if Perry can withstand the rigors of the upcoming debates and the the investigative force of the mainstream media that follows.
If Perry proves resilient, the campaign is readying the following attacks:
1) Perry’s comments on Social Security
Romney’s campaign will argue that Perry is against the very idea of Social Security and Medicare, and that he will use Perry’s book to scare seniors in early-primary states with large retiree populations, such as Florida and South Carolina.
2) Immigration
Perry opposed a border fence and signed legislation allowing the children of illegal immigrants to attend Texas colleges and universities at in-state tuition.
3) Politician vs. businessman
Perry, they say, is as an old-style Texas, pay-to-play, career politician; Romney is a business man who created jobs in the private sector.
