Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., addressed a letter to billionaire Warren Buffett asking for the “prompt disclosure of your tax claims.”
Huelskamp responded to President Obama’s proposed “Buffett Rule,” a millionaire tax rate that derives its name from Buffett saying that he pays less in taxes than his secretary. Huelskamp suggested that Buffett must be paying capital gains taxes rather than income taxes, and so concluded that “perhaps the assertion about paying a lower rate in taxes than your secretary is true, but it is certainly misleading.”
Huelskamp asked Buffett to clarify the issue by “publicly disclos[ing his] tax returns as soon as possible so that policymakers, and the American people who elect them, can properly determine their veracity.”
President Obama has repeatedly invoked Buffett’s anecdote in defense of his tax plan.
