Obama: Iran so far away?

In an interview (taped Friday and) aired this morning on CBS’ “Early Show,” President Obama explained some of his thinking on the measured White House response so far to post-election violence in Iran.

“The last thing that I want to do is to have the United States be a foil for those forces inside Iran who would love nothing better than to make this an argument about the United States,” Obama said. “That’s what they do. That’s what we’re already seeing. We shouldn’t be playing into that. There should be no distractions from the fact that the Iranian people are seeking to let their voices be heard.”

The House voted to condemn the Iranian government crackdown on protesters — in a near-unanimous vote, with Republican Rep. Ron Paul of Texas offering the lone (star) dissent. Obama likes to ignore outside pressure and go his own way — so he will disregard that.

The president on Saturday issued a statement about Iran, invoking America’s civil right struggle. He’s not scheduled to say anything about Iran today — but you never know. Do you support Obama’s stance on Iran, or do you think he should come out stronger?
