NASA releases image of globular cluster from Hubble Telescope

NASA released a new image of a globular cluster captured by the Hubble Space Telescope.

The picture includes the thousands of sparkling stars that make up the NGC 2298 globular cluster and was shared by the space agency on Wednesday with a social media post to mark Valentine’s Day.

“To show our love, here’s a new image of the globular cluster NGC 2298. These stars are attracted to each other… gravitationally, that is,” NASA posted on X.

The space agency described NGC 2298 as a “sparkling collection of thousands of stars held together by their mutual gravitational attraction” in a blog post. Globular clusters include older stars and can be found in the “dusty outskirts of galaxies,” according to NASA.

The Hubble Space Telescope was launched into space in 1990 by NASA and has been capturing images of distant space for the past three decades. NASA has released hundreds of images from the telescope in the time since it has been operational.

In addition to the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA also releases images from the James Webb Space Telescope, which was launched in 2021 and has more advanced technology.

The advanced capabilities of the Webb telescope allow scientists to better understand the universe, including exploring concepts and research discovered using the Hubble telescope. Images released by NASA from the Webb telescope range from planets to distant galaxies.
