A former British soldier sacrificed his life in Ukraine as he joined forces with men and women fending off Russian troops.

Jordan Gatley left the army in March but kept his career as a soldier alive, traveling to Ukraine to fight there, his father, Dean Gatley, wrote on Facebook. Jordan “went to Ukraine to help,” but he was shot and killed in Severodonetsk, Ukraine, according to his father’s post.

“The war against Europe had begun so, after [careful] consideration, he went to the Ukraine to help,” Dean Gatley wrote. “We have had several messages from his team out there telling us of his wealth of knowledge, his skills as a soldier and his love of his job. His team say they all loved him, as did we, and he made a massive difference to many peoples lives, not only soldiering, but also by training the Ukrainian forces.”

Dean Gatley’s post about his son’s sacrifice received hundreds of comments and almost 1,000 shares across Facebook.

Jordan Gatley was far from the only foreign national who felt a call to join Ukrainian fighters in their resistance to the Russian invasion. Thousands of U.S. citizens, including several former service members, signed up to fight in Ukraine weeks after Russia initiated its invasion in late February.

At the time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said roughly 16,000 foreign fighters had expressed an interest in joining his country’s ranks.

As foreign fighters surge in Ukraine, they have not all survived. In addition to Jordan Gatley, Scott Sibley, a former British soldier, was killed in Ukraine in April.

Some fighters who have taken up Ukraine’s cause for themselves but were captured face death as well. Last week, pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine sentenced three foreign fighters to death. The three men, two British nationals and a Moroccan civilian, were sentenced in a court in the Donetsk People’s Republic, a breakaway region that has declared its allegiance to Russia.
