Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has summoned hundreds of senior military officials to meet at a Marine Corps Base in Virginia next week, though the purpose of the meeting is unclear.
The unusual directive sent to all senior officers with the rank of brigadier general or above, or their Navy equivalent, serving in command positions and their top enlisted advisers, was issued earlier this week and the meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday in Quantico, Virginia, according to the Washington Post.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told the Washington Examiner Hegseth “will be addressing his senior military leaders early next week,” but offered no additional details.
Top military officers overseas and in conflict zones are among those expected to attend the meeting.
Hegseth has made significant changes to the Pentagon through his first roughly eight months as secretary ranging from firing several senior military leaders, ordering a reduction of at least 20% of 4-star positions across the Active Component, and putting a greater focus on protecting the U.S. homeland.
In the first month or so of the Trump administration, they fired Gen. Charles Q. Brown, then the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Adm. Lisa Franchetti, then the Chief of Naval Operations; Adm. Linda Fagan, then the Coast Guard Commandant; and Gen. James Slife; the former vice chief of staff of the Air Force.

Last month, Hegseth fired Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Kruse, who had served as the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.
He and President Donald Trump have also initiated the process for renaming the Department of Defense to the Department of War.
