Spike in First Time Claims

Bloomberg is reporting that:

Jobless claims climbed by 19,000 to 316,000 in the week ended Jan. 10, the most since early September, from a revised 297,000 in the prior period, a Labor Department report showed today in Washington. The median forecast of 48 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for 290,000.

This is a fairly large miss and coupled with yesterday’s disappointing numbers on consumer spending could lead one to wonder if the good times are truly here again or if we merely continue to stumble along, through what we are often, and unpleasantly reminded is the worst post-war recovery … ever.
