Some Social Security offices are closed or limiting in-person services across 12 states, potentially delaying access to benefits and other services. According to the Social Security Administration’s emergency operations webpage, the SSA has temporarily closed or shifted several field offices to phone-only service.
The changes affect offices in Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia.

Local Social Security offices provide in-person assistance for a range of services, including applying for retirement, disability, and Supplemental Security Income benefits; replacing Social Security cards; updating personal information; and resolving complex claims or appeals.
Many of these services can still be completed online or by phone, but some requests requiring identity verification or original documents may be delayed when offices are not open to the public.
Applicants seeking benefits for the first time or those needing to submit documentation in person may experience the most significant delays. Scheduled appointments may also be rescheduled or moved to phone-based consultations.
The SSA is advising individuals to check the status of their local office before visiting and to use alternative options when possible. Many services are available through the agency’s “my Social Security” online portal or its national hotline at 1-800-772-1213.
