The story is so depressingly familiar that you just read it and shrug it off. According to a CBS report:
Hard to imagine any other institution, with the possible exception of Congress, putting up with this sort of failure rate but we have all grown accustomed to the dismal outcomes and ever increasing expense of our public education establishment.
Since this report arrives in the midst of a great national debate over whether or not the government can survive a 3 percent cut in the amount of money it is given to spend, perhaps it will occur to some that we have had a Department of Education in Washington for more than 30 years now and it spends billions. To, manifestly, no avail.
Anyone proposing shutting down this department is accused of being anti-education or something like that. But he can respond by saying, “No. Not anti-education. Just anti-failure.”
