Miller wants to merge U.Md. campuses

Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller is interested in the possibility of merging the University of Maryland College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore. A Senate budget subcommittee adopted the proposal in Senate budget language Monday. The idea would have to be approved by the General Assembly.

The University of Maryland, College Park is Maryland’s flagship university with major undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. It also has a significant research component. The University of Maryland, Baltimore has seven professional and graduate schools that train the majority of the state’s doctors, nurses, dentists, lawyers, social workers and pharmacists.

The proposal calls on the University System of Maryland Board of Regents to study any issues raised by a merger and to develop a plan for going through with one by December. – AP
