Summer school shuttered by power outages

Summer school was canceled Monday across most of the Washington area as campuses remained dark after Friday’s storm.

School systems in the District, Montgomery, Prince George’s and Alexandria canceled all summer programs, including camps and daycare centers, on Monday amid the widespread power outages.

Monday was to be the first day of summer school for Prince George’s students. Montgomery also announced that its schools would remain closed Tuesday.

Fairfax and Arlington counties took a school-by-school approach, announcing Monday morning that only certain schools that host summer programs would shutter for the day. In Arlington, elemantaries without power were Barcroft, Barrett, Henry and Nottingham; 15 schools and two parent centers remained closed in Fairfax County (see full list below).

The D.C. Office of the State Superintendent announced late Sunday that it was suspending bus service for D.C. students in the absence of summer school.

However, 822 special-education students rely on the buses to take them to year-round programs outside of the District. OSSE officials said they were not aware of how many of these programs had power and were open to students on Monday.
