Md. county tightens reins on library spending

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — The Frederick County Commissioners are tightening the reins on library spending.

The Frederick News-Post (http://bit.ly/O4XOzg ) reports that the board approved a plan Thursday requiring county library officials to make quarterly reports on the titles of books and CDs they bought in the previous three months.

The commissioners will review the lists before freeing up money for more purchases. They can’t tell the library which titles to buy but can withhold funds for new materials.

Republican Commissioner Billy Shreve says he’d like to know how much money the county could save by postponing purchases of new books until a year after publication.

The new policy ends a four-month freeze on book-buying. Some commissioners have publicly criticized library officials for a perceived lack of financial accountability.
