Target chips in $150k for D.C. reading program

Retail giant Target donated $150,000 to the D.C. Reading Corps to a program that seeks to boost the literacy of elementary school students, the city announced Friday.

“The Target Reading Grant is a fine example of a public and private partnership being used to help our city continue to move forward,” Mayor Vincent Gray said in a statement. “Early childhood education is critical to the long term academic success of our young people who will one day become part of our workforce.”

The city said the money will be used to place reading tutors in preschool and elementary school classrooms.
