Four French sailors were saved Sunday after the U.S. Coast Guard in Virginia coordinated their rescue from a trans-Atlantic trip gone awry. Lt. Jon Paul Parker, command duty officer for the Coast Guard’s 5th District, said stormy weather broke the vessel’s mast in the Atlantic Ocean nearly 1,600 miles east of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Virginia unit responded to an emergency alert and requested that a Greek merchant ship aid the sailors on Saturday. The sailors were rescued on Sunday and were to be taken to Philadelphia. – Lisa Gartner
