The president of the University of Virginia agreed to step down from her post on Aug. 15 due a disagreement with the board about the school’s direction.
“The Board feels strongly and overwhelmingly that we need bold and proactive leadership on tackling the difficult issues that we face,” Rector Helen Dragas said in statement to college officials.
Teresa A. Sullivan, a scholar on labor force demography who previously served as provost at the University of Michigan, has only held the top at U.Va. since Aug. 2010. As the eighth president of the school founded by Thomas Jefferson, she was the first woman to have the job.
The university plans to quicky appoint an interim president.
