Prince George’s County Superintendent William Hite is one of two finalists being courted by Philadelphia for its chief schools post. Now, the Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting that the other finalist, Pedro Martinez, has accepted the superintent job of Washoe County, Nev.
Does this mean Prince George’s is losing Hite?
Quite possibly, but it’s not final yet. Hite’s spokesman, Briant Coleman, said his boss had not received an offer from Phildelphia as of Friday afternoon. “I think Dr. Hite is still making a decision,” Coleman said, clarifying that “no decision” has been given to Hite from the City of Brotherly Love yet.
According to Philadelphia papers, there has been no word from the city’s deciding commission yet, and the search committee chairman said he is still talking to Martinez.
Superintendent positions have been changing faster than classes these days in the Washington area. Montgomery County’s Jerry Weast ended his 12-year reign last summer, while Fairfax County Superintendent Jack Dale plans to leave the school system next summer.
Fairfax County is losing administrator Peter Noonan to Fairfax City, where he’ll take over as superintendent on July 1. Falls Church City Public Schools began last school year with a new superintendent poached from Oklahoma.
Hite has been the head of Prince George’s County Public Schools, the second-largest school district in Maryland, since December 2008, when he was appointed the interim superintendent. He was named the permanent chief that April.
