Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin blasted administrators in Fairfax County Public Schools for what he said were violations of parental rights.
At a “Back to School” rally in Fairfax County with several Virginia GOP congressional candidates on Wednesday, Youngkin offered scathing criticism of the county’s school district for pushing several policies allowing students to choose a different gender identity at school without parental notification or consent.
FAIRFAX SCHOOLS ORIENTATION INSTRUCTS STUDENTS ON GENDER IDENTITY ‘NON-DISCLOSURE’
“These … progressives in Fairfax County actually believe that they should lock parents out of their children’s lives,” Youngkin said.
The governor referenced a teacher training program in the county, first reported by the Washington Examiner, that told teachers that parental notification was not required for students who wished to be addressed by a different name or pronoun in class or on school documents.

“They think that parents have no right to know what your child is discussing with their teacher or their counselor, particularly when some of the most important topics that a child may want to discuss are being determined,” Youngkin said. “What’s their name? What pronoun will they use? How are they going to express their gender? This is a decision that bureaucrats in Fairfax County believe that they should be able to make without telling parents.”

The Virginia governor defended the role of teachers in a child’s education, saying that “teachers play such an extraordinary role” in education.
“I cannot believe that bureaucrats and administrators can tell teachers to engage in these discussions and allow these decisions to be made without informing a parent. Cannot happen,” he said.

Youngkin vowed to use “every ounce of my authority” to “work … to protect parents’ rights.”
“Our commitment to Virginians is to reestablish excellence in education,” Youngkin said. “We went to work on Day One because this is all about empowering parents. This is all about addressing your concerns. This is all about safety in schools, curriculum in schools, the decline in standards, and reestablishing expectations of excellence.”
