Ernest Moniz named designated survivor

Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz has been tabbed as the designated survivor for Tuesday’s State of the Union address.

That means Moniz won’t be at the Capitol in case a calamity should strike the other cabinet-level officers attending President Obama’s speech. Moniz would have the responsibility of running the federal government if a catastrophe struck the nation’s leadership.

The selection of Moniz marks the second year in a row the Energy secretary has held the distinction. Last year, then-Energy Secretary Steven Chu was the designated survivor.
