Herschel Walker’s criticism of Green New Deal goes viral

Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker’s criticism of the Green New Deal during a campaign stop over the weekend has gone viral, with many on social media questioning the former football star’s comments on air pollution.

During a speech in Hall County, Georgia, on Saturday, Walker discussed the importance of energy in the United States, and he offered his thoughts on the Green New Deal, a liberal energy reform policy that would transition the economy away from fossil fuels. Walker expressed his frustrations with the policy, claiming that China and India will continue to pollute and that “good air” from America will force polluted air out of China and into the U.S.

“We, in America, have some of the cleanest air and cleanest water of anybody in the world,” Walker said. “So what we are going to do is put, from the Green New Deal, millions, billions of dollars cleaning our good air up. So all of the sudden, China and India, they put nothing to clean that situation up.”

“Since we don’t control the air, our good air decided to float over to China’s bad air, so when China gets our good air, their bad air got to move. So it moves over to our good air space. Then now we got we to clean that back up,” Walker claimed.

The candidate’s remarks went viral on Monday, drawing widespread criticism on Twitter.

“Are you kidding me? Is this a skit? Has the GOP really descended to this? To the ignorance and lunacy of the likes of Donald Trump and Herschel Walker?” MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan tweeted, comparing Walker to Republicans such as former President George W. Bush, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, former Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA).

“If ever there was an argument for not letting your children play football,” journalist Julia Ioffe tweeted.

The Trump-endorsed candidate’s comments also got the attention of Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA), who shared the video of Walker’s remarks “for your information.”

Walker’s campaign spokeswoman Mallory Blunt shared the video candidate’s comments on Twitter as well, saying, “Does Senator Warnock not agree that China is the world’s biggest polluter?”
