Though Germany remains deeply dependent on Russian energy supplies, namely natural gas, it managed to cut its Russian imports by 8% in May, researchers at the Helsinki-based center found.

This is in keeping with broader trends in the European Union as the bloc moves to cut its dependence on Russian imports and secure alternative energy supplies.
Imports to China remained constant, however, allowing it to overtake Germany as the No. 1 buyer. Beijing imported Russian energy supplies worth roughly 12.6 billion euros, the group found.
India has also become a significant importer, purchasing 18% of Russian exports.
The largest reductions in Russian revenue came from Poland and the United States, the group said. Meanwhile, Lithuania, Finland, and Estonia all achieve sharp Russian imports reductions of 50% each.
The U.S., which is far less reliant on outside energy exports than the EU, passed its own Russian energy ban in March.
Still, fossil fuels are filling the Kremlin’s war chest. Despite the EU’s efforts to punish Moscow by shunning its energy supplies, heightened demand and a global scramble for fossil fuels have created something of a windfall for Moscow in the short term.

“Fossil fuel exports are a key enabler of Russia’s military buildup and brutal aggression against Ukraine,” the report said.
Russia’s average export prices remain on average 60% higher than last year despite discounts in international prices.
