Gas prices: Increase at the pumps for second consecutive day

The national average price for regular gas increased again this week, rising to $3.611 per gallon on Wednesday, as reported by AAA. It was the second consecutive day of notable price hikes. On Monday, the average cost of regular gas was $3.59 per gallon. On Tuesday, it was $3.598 per gallon. 

The price increases mark the latest fluctuation in gas prices in the nation. One week ago, the average price for regular gas was $3.607 per gallon. Last month, it was $3.675 per gallon.

Additionally, gas prices continue to be higher in 2024 than at this time last year. Wednesday’s average price of regular gas was higher than in May 2023. The average cost per gallon from a year ago was $3.54.

Mississippi has the cheapest gas prices in the nation, with an average price of $3.058 per gallon. The state with the most expensive gas is California at $5.172 per gallon. 

The states with the least expensive gas prices are along the Gulf Coast and Midwest. 

Among the states with relatively lower gas prices are Louisiana at $3.159 per gallon, Texas at $3.183 per gallon, Alabama at $3.229 per gallon, Arkansas and Oklahoma at $3.112 per gallon, and Kansas at $3.139 per gallon, providing a clear contrast to the national average.

The states with the most expensive gas prices are in the western United States.

In addition to California, states with the highest gas prices per gallon include Hawaii at $4.797 per gallon, Washington at $4.590 per gallon, Oregon at $4.359 per gallon, Nevada at $4.358 per gallon, Alaska at $4.320 per gallon, and Arizona at $3.886 per gallon. 

Here is how much gas costs on average in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, as well as in some other states.

Washington D.C.

The average price per gallon in the nation’s capital was $3.716, above the national average, but a very slight downtick from the previous day, when it stood at $3.719.

Virginia

The average in Virginia looks good in comparison to the national average on Wednesday, standing at $3.462, although it is an increase from Tuesday’s per gallon total which was $3.436.

Maryland

Maryland’s average per gallon on Wednesday is $3.639, which is above the national average. It’s also a notable jump compared to the previous day, which was $3.555.

California

The Golden State continues to set the high watermark for gas, with an average price of $5.172 per gallon, comfortably ahead of the second highest, Hawaii, which is $4.797. The next highest on the U.S. mainland is Washington State at $4.590.

Mississippi

Mississippi is the state with the lowest average price per gallon as things stand. Consumers can expect an average price of $3.058, nearly 50 cents lower than the national average. This is a very marginal uptick from Tuesday’s average, which was $3.057.
