The national average price for regular gas increased again this week, rising to $3.615 per gallon on Thursday, as reported by AAA.
The hike marks the third consecutive day that the average price of gas has risen. On Monday, the average cost of regular gas was $3.59 per gallon, on Tuesday, it was $3.598 per gallon, and on Wednesday, prices reached $3.611 per gallon.
Thursday’s price increase was the latest fluctuation in gas prices nationwide. One week ago, the average price for regular gas was $3.60 per gallon. A month ago, prices were $3.667 per gallon.
Thursday’s average price of regular gas was also higher than in May 2023. The average cost per gallon from a year ago was $3.543.

Mississippi remains the state with the least expensive gas prices in the nation, with an average price of $3.064 per gallon. However, gas prices have also increased in this state in the last 24 hours. On Wednesday, the average cost of gas in Mississippi was $3.058.
The state with the most expensive gas is still California at $5.155 per gallon on Thursday. However, despite costing more than any other state in the nation, gas prices in California are bucking the trend throughout the country and have actually been decreasing during the last week. On Wednesday, the average cost of regular gas in the Golden State was $5.172. A week ago, it was $5.241 per gallon.
With gas costs varying so much throughout the nation, the Washington Examiner compiled a brief list of prices in some states nationwide. Here is the average cost of gas in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and some other states around the country.
Washington D.C.
The average price per gallon in the nation’s capital on Thursday is $3.704, above the national average. However, this price was a slight decrease from Wednesday, when it stood at $3.716.
Virginia
In Virginia, the average price of gas is $3.470 on Thursday, which is favorable compared to the national average. However, this price was also an increase from Wednesday’s cost of $3.462 per gallon.
Maryland
Maryland’s average per gallon on Thursday is $3.666, which is above the national average. This price is also an increase from Wednesday, in which the average price for regular gas was $3.639. It’s also a notable jump compared to last week, when the cost was $3.559.

Florida
Florida is a popular vacation destination this time of year. Traveling by car in the Sunshine State will cost you slightly less than the national average. The average price of regular gas in Florida is $3.556 per gallon on Thursday. However, gas prices are increasing. On Wednesday, the average price for regular gas was $3.553. Last week, gas cost Floridians $3.498 per gallon.
Montana
Another popular tourist destination is Montana. Tourists in this state can enjoy cooler climates and also see where the popular show Yellowstone is set. The average cost of regular gas in the state is $3.475 per gallon. This is a bit cheaper than the national average of $3.615. Prices have also been decreasing in the state, with the average cost of gas on Wednesday at $3.476. A week ago, the average gasoline price in Montana was $3.483 per gallon.
