‘Not fair’ that Pentagon slammed for well-known tradition of lobster meals: Salena Zito

Washington Examiner columnist Salena Zito said it is “not fair” for Democrats to slam the Department of War over serving troops lobster meals when it’s a well-known tradition under both Democratic and Republican administrations.

Zito said the meal is a “common occurrence,” stating that traditionally service members are treated to lobster and steak on Fridays or Saturdays after a week of boiled chicken.

“This is something the military has done for the men and women there to give them something to look forward to,” Zito said Thursday on Fox News’s America Reports

An analysis by government watchdog Open the Books found that in September, the end of the fiscal 2025, the War Department spent $9 million on crab and lobster dinners.

The report went viral online, prompting Democrats to slam War Secretary Pete Hegseth for spending millions on lobster dinners amid an affordability crisis.

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) posted on X, calling it a “waste of taxpayer dollars.”

Zito pointed out that the defense secretaries under the Obama and Biden administrations also participated in the tradition, saying people are only upset about it now because of President Donald Trump

“These are our men and women who are serving us and protecting us, but because it has to do with President Trump this becomes an outrage. This becomes clicks,” Zito said. “I followed how this story traveled, and it went to millions and millions of people and circulated everywhere.”
