Social Security update: Second half of direct monthly checks worth $1,682 to be sent in three days

The second Supplemental Security Income check sent out in September is set to arrive for eligible recipients in just three days.

Recipients will receive a second payment of $841 on Sept. 30, bringing the monthly total up to $1,682 due to a scheduling quirk in the program. Additionally, essential persons who live with an SSI beneficiary will get a second payment of $421 on Sept. 30.

The second check is not extra money, as the maximum check one can earn in 2022 is $841 a month. However, due to a scheduling conflict, September is one of three months this year in which SSI recipients receive two SSI checks. The other two are in April and December. Beneficiaries will receive no payment in October.

Payments for SSI generally take place on the first day of each month, but in 2022, the first days in January, May, and October are either on a holiday or a weekend. Thus, the agency relies on double payments to offset the scheduling issue. The agency makes 12 payments a year.

SSI is a means-tested program that gives payments to the elderly, blind, and disabled who have next to no income. The average payment one receives is $624, according to CNBC.

The SSI program was first created in 1972. Some members of Congress have sought to bolster the program, arguing that it is rife with outdated rules on income and assets. On average, most recipients have incomes within 150% of the federal poverty level, CNBC reported.

Next year, Social Security payments will likely rise due to growing inflation rates, according to analysts. But some people may end up earning less than what they receive now because the increase in payments could place them in higher tax brackets.
