Joe Scarborough warns US could get ‘drunk on militarism’ as Lindsey Graham eyes Cuba

MS Now’s Joe Scarborough said Monday that Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) “Wilsonian” idea of spreading democracy across the globe will likely end in “disaster.”

Graham applauded President Donald Trump’s leadership against Iran, saying that the United States is “cleaning out the bad guys” and said “Cuba is next” as he showed a “Free Cuba” baseball hat, Sunday. The president has also indicated the U.S. will turn its attention to Cuba in the near future, saying Secretary of State Marco Rubio has “been doing a fantastic job on a place called Cuba” on Thursday.

Scarborough spoke out against Graham’s proposal to “export democracy” globally, calling this “a recipe for disaster” and “American weakness.

“I’ve said for years, America’s the most powerful country militarily, economically, culturally, when you look at soft power, technologically, in just about every measure, just like we were at the turn of the century in 2000, with the collapsed Soviet Union, we were powerful,” Scarborough said on MS Now’s Morning Joe. “Well, then we went into Afghanistan and Iraq. A lot of people, we understand Afghanistan. But then we had this sort of talk that you hear from Lindsey Graham about this military adventurism. We’re on the march, we’re going across the world.”

“No, no, that didn’t work for George W Bush. It’s not going to work for this president,” Scarborough said.

The co-host acknowledged that times arise when the U.S. must go to war, but doing so while “drunk on militarism always leads to disaster.”

He cited other foreign conflicts the U.S. has involved itself in under other presidents, listing former President Lyndon Johnson’s involvement in the Vietnam War and former President Barack Obama’s strikes on Libya.

Mika Brzezinski, Scarborough’s wife and fellow co-host, said Trump has followed through on many of his campaign promises “for better or for worse.” However, she noted she didn’t remember the president promising a possible invasion of Cuba.

Graham pushed the president to attack Iran as a way of solidifying his legacy, drawing comparisons to former President Ronald Reagan’s involvement in ending the Soviet Union. The senator described taking down Iran’s regime as “Berlin Wall stuff.”

The Washington Examiner contacted MS Now and Graham’s office for comment.
