Vance attempts to clear up confusion around three Iran war peace proposals

Vice President JD Vance attempted to clear up public confusion about three different Iran war peace proposals circulating in the media and online.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Vance sought to clarify what proposed peace plan the United States had accepted as a good starting point for negotiations, thereby triggering the two-week ceasefire on Tuesday. He echoed the sentiment of President Donald Trump and other Trump administration officials in criticizing reporting on the matter, explaining that three peace proposals were being referenced.

“The first 10-point proposal was something that was submitted, and we think, frankly, was probably written by ChatGPT,” Vance said, adding that it “immediately went to garbage and was rejected.”

“There was a second 10-point proposal that was much more reasonable, that was based on some back and forth between us, between the Pakistanis, and that is the 10-point proposal that the president was referencing in his Truth [social post] yesterday,” he added.

Vance then claimed he saw a “third 10-point proposal that’s even more maximalist than the first 10-point proposal that’s been floating around various social media channels.”

The vice president characterized the first 10-point plan referenced as having been touted by “a random yahoo in Iran” that did not at all reflect the position agreed upon by Washington.

To make sense of the confusion, Vance speculated that the government’s position in Tehran differed from that of “some crazy people at the fringes” within Iran who were leaking fake information for propaganda purposes or out of embarrassment.

The full actual peace plan that led to the ceasefire has not yet been released to the public, and the U.S. and Iran have given contradictory information about what was included in it. Washington and Tehran have both been quick to pitch the ceasefire as a victory to their respective domestic audiences.

The online circulation of “numerous agreements, lists, and letters” angered Trump, who claimed that they were “sent out by people that have absolutely nothing to do with the U.S.A. / Iran Negotiation, in many cases, they are total Fraudsters, Charlatans, and WORSE.”

“They will be rapidly exposed after our Federal Investigation is completed,” Trump wrote in a Wednesday post on Truth Social. “There is only one group of meaningful ‘POINTS’ that are acceptable to the United States, and we will be discussing them behind closed doors during these Negotiations. These are the POINTS that are the basis on which we agreed to a CEASEFIRE. It is something that is reasonable, and can easily be dispensed with.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt made similar comments at a Wednesday press conference.

“The Iranians originally put forward a 10-point plan that was fundamentally unserious, unacceptable, and completely discarded,” she said. “It was literally thrown in the garbage by President Trump and his negotiating team.”
