It’s worth recalling President Barack Obama’s foreign policy instincts before tonight’s presidential debate on that topic.
In 2006, for instance, Obama, then a junior senator from Illinois, wanted Iran and Syria without preconditions to join America in helping to solve Iraq:
“Do you support the notion of bringing Iran and Syria into some sort of regional international conference without any preconditions?” asked CNN’s Wolf Blitzer in a TV interview.
“Yes,” said Obama. “And I said so three weeks ago. I think that we — if we can talk to the Kremlin when they’ve got nuclear weapons pointed at us for 50 years, then we can talk to Iran and Syria.”
