Although the prime minister survived a no-confidence vote in early June, he announced his departure on Thursday after persistent disunity within the party. Johnson, who was a major figure in leading NATO’s funding of Ukraine’s fight against Russia, was not a popular face among Russian lawmakers, who expressed their approval of his resignation. Many of them said they see this as a victory for Russia.
BORIS JOHNSON RESIGNS, SAYS PROCESS OF SELECTING NEW LEADER BEGINS NOW
“The clown is going. He is one of the main ideologues of the war against Russia until the last Ukrainian. European leaders should think about where such a policy leads,” said Vyacheslav Volodin, the speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament.
“The moral of the story is: Do not seek to destroy Russia. Russia cannot be destroyed. You can break your teeth on it — and then choke on them,” said Maria Zakharova, the top spokeswoman in Russia’s foreign ministry.
“Boris Johnson was hit by a boomerang launched by himself. His comrades-in-arms turned him in,” Zakharova added.

Johnson won a resounding victory in 2019 before finalizing the 2016 Brexit referendum and leading the United Kingdom out of the European Union. However, when evidence that Johnson and members of his government attended several parties at No. 10 Downing St. while the rest of the country was locked down during COVID-19, cracks began to form in Johnson’s party. Then, sexual harassment allegations against the recently promoted Chris Pincher drew questions about Johnson’s knowledge of the allegations and their validity.
After two major ministers resigned on Tuesday, in addition to 44 other Conservative aides and ministers, Johnson recognized that his party would be immobilized if he continued as prime minister. Johnson announced that he would remain in his role until a replacement leader could be found.
