Over 20 million Americans have now been vaccinated for the coronavirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That milestone was reached nearly a month late. On Dec. 9, then-Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar said that 20 million people would be vaccinated by the end of 2020.
The CDC reports that 20,687,970 people have received at least one dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. Of those, about 3.8 million have received a second dose.
Azar also stated that 50 million people could be vaccinated by January 2021 and 100 million by the end of the first quarter of this year. While it is likely that 50 million doses of the vaccine will be distributed by the end of this month, 47.2 million have been distributed so far, getting them into actual arms has proven a challenge.
President Biden has promised to have 100 million Americans vaccinated in his first 100 days in office, a goal that would have to be reached by the end of April. That goal seems feasible as vaccinations have averaged about 1.1 million a day since Inauguration Day.
