Poor ratings on coronavirus response drag down perception of US abroad

The United States has low marks for its coronavirus response among citizens of other nations, according to a new opinion survey.

The new poll, conducted by the Pew Research Center, surveyed 13 nations and found that a median of just 15% across the countries said the U.S. has handled the pandemic well. Across the nations surveyed, a median of 64% said the World Health Organization had done a good job managing the coronavirus. A median of 57% said the same of the European Union.

South Korea had the lowest opinion of the U.S. response, with only 6% responding favorably. Spain had the highest at 20%. Other nations surveyed included Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Opinions toward the U.S. virus response appear to have affected the view of America more generally. Just 31% in France and 26% in Germany now view the U.S. favorably, the lowest those numbers have been since the height of the Iraq War. The U.K. registered the lowest rating ever in a Pew survey, with only 41% holding a favorable view of the U.S.
