Spanish deputy prime minister tests positive for coronavirus as nationwide death toll surpasses China

Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo tested positive for the coronavirus Wednesday.

Calvo is “recovering well and receiving prescribed medical treatment” at the Ruber hospital in Madrid, the prime minister’s press office reported to El Mundo.

After testing negative earlier in the week despite showing symptoms, Calvo took another diagnostic test Wednesday because the initial results were not considered conclusive.

Meanwhile, the number of deaths in Spain due to the coronavirus has surpassed the number of deaths in China, surpassing 3,400 by Wednesday versus 3,271 in China. While the outbreak in China has slowed, Spain’s case count increased by over 7,900 cases in 24 hours. The number of fatalities has jumped by hundreds in the past couple of days, but Fernando Simon, the emergency coordinator of the Ministry of Health, told El País that Spain is approaching peak contagion.

“The stabilization of the number of deaths is linked to the peak of the curve. We are very close to that peak, although I dare not say if we have arrived. But the trends we are observing indicate that we are approaching,” he said.

The number of deaths in Spain has increased steadily since March 19. The steepest increase was 738 cases from Tuesday to Wednesday.
