A possible boat explosion in Miami led to several people suffering burn injuries and being rushed to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

At least 13 injuries were reported and 11 people went to the hospital, with people reporting burns and other minor injuries, according to Battalion Chief Juan Arias.

Over 25 units from the fire rescue team responded to a call around 12:45 p.m. near a shallow boating area called Haulover Sandbar. They found multiple patients, prompting an upgrade to a Level 2 Mass Casualty incident.

One adult had more than 30% of his body burned, and at least one more was burned on 18% of the body, according to the Miami Herald. Local fire rescue was assisted by the Fish & Wildlife Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Melissa Brevik, a spokeswoman for the FWC, said that “preliminary information indicates a charter vessel carrying several passengers was in Biscayne Bay, near the Haulover Sandbar, when an explosion occurred on board.” She added that the cause of the explosion is under investigation.
