Safer for students to live on campus than with older relatives, Trump says

President Trump criticized colleges and universities that have suspended in-person learning.

“There is nothing like being with a teacher as opposed to being on a computer board,” Trump said at a press conference Wednesday. “The iPads are wonderful, but you’re not going to learn the same way you do as being there.”

“For university students, the likelihood of severe illness is less than or equal to the risk of a seasonal flu …Instead of saving lives, the decision to close universities could cost lives,” he said. “It is significantly safer for students to live with other young people than to go home and spread the virus to older Americans.”

In recent days, Michigan State University and Notre Dame have suspended in-person classes and moved to remote learning after COVID-19 outbreaks on campus. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, nearly 130 students tested positive for COVID-19 in the first week after classes started, causing the university to suspend in-person classes.
