In total, 12 states, including California, Washington, Virginia, and Hawaii, as well as the nation’s capital, all have confirmed cases after a global outbreak of the virus, according to data updated Monday by the CDC. The 31 figure reported by the agency is for monkeypox and the viruses encompassed by its genus, orthopoxvirus, which also includes smallpox.
DC CONFIRMS FIRST CASE OF MONKEYPOX
“It’s not clear how the people were exposed to monkeypox, but early data suggest that gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men make up a high number of cases. However, anyone who has been in close contact with someone who has monkeypox is at risk,” the CDC wrote in a summary webpage of the cases.

At seven, New York has the highest number of cases. One case in Florida included in the CDC’s tally has also been listed in the United Kingdom’s case count, as the individual was tested overseas.
The CDC also raised its monkeypox alert for travelers to Level 2 on Monday, encouraging U.S. travelers to avoid close contact with sick individuals, including those with skin lesions or genital lesions, and to avoid contact with dead or live wild animals, including rats, squirrels, monkeys, and apes.
More than 1,000 cases of monkeypox and orthopoxviruses have been reported across 29 countries, according to a global tally by the CDC.

President Joe Biden cautioned that monkeypox does not pose the same health risks as COVID-19.
Monkeypox is most commonly reported in parts of Central and West Africa, where people can be exposed via bites or scratches from rodents and small mammals. Those with the illness usually develop a rash on their face and body, with symptoms typically lasting between two and four weeks.
No deaths associated with monkeypox have been reported since the outbreak began May 13, according to the World Health Organization.
