Univision fired back at Donald Trump Wednesday evening, blasting the Republican candidate for “admonishing” Univision reporter Jorge Ramos and “countless Hispanics whom Jorge seeks to represent.”
“The recent treatment that Jorge Ramos received at Mr. Trump’s press conference in Iowa is beneath contempt,” wrote Randy Falco, president and CEO of Univision Communications Inc. “As a presidential candidate, Mr. Trump is going to get tough questions from the press and has to answer them.”
The statement goes on to say that Ramos is one of the “most professional, dedicated and respected journalists I have seen or worked with in my 40 years in media. … Mr. Trump demonstrated complete disregard for him and the countless Hispanics whom Jorge seeks to represent through press questions that are at the heart of the First Amendment.”
At the beginning of a press conference Tuesday, Trump had a security detail forcibly remove Ramos when he stood up — before he was called on to ask a question — and challenged Trump to defend his newly announced immigration platform.
He was later allowed back in the room, and permitted to ask his question to the billionaire businessman.
Trump poked a hornets’ nest at his campaign launch in June when he said that Mexico sent the worst of its population, drug dealers and rapists, to the United States. Univision, the Spanish-language broadcaster, responded to his comments by cutting ties with the Trump Organization.
