A new poll found more than half of Americans support GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s plan to deport immigrants in the U.S. illegally, but at the same time two-thirds of respondents want to allow illegal aliens to apply for legal status.
The results exemplify how voters can be confused by complex issues like immigration and supported “seemingly contradictory plans,” Democratic pollster Chris Anderson said in a statement.
Fifty-two percent favor removing illegal aliens while 40 percent oppose it, according to a Fox News national poll released Tuesday night.
But 68 percent want to give people working in the U.S. illegally the ability to apply for legal status and avoid deportation.
“Republicans overwhelmingly support deportation and a wall, so that’s what Republican candidates are talking about, even though the plan that generates the broadest agreement is to allow those working here to apply for legal status,” Anderson said.
More than half of each political grouping – Democrats, independents and Republicans – favored allowing illegal immigrants to apply for legal status.
