Cruz drops new immigration ad: ‘Invasion’

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign unveiled a new television ad on Tuesday that focuses on immigration’s effect on the economy.

The ad, titled “Invasion,” uses Cruz’s words from a GOP presidential debate about immigration and includes a split screen with rival Republican candidate Marco Rubio. Cruz has made a point of contrasting his views on immigration with Rubio while on the campaign trail.

“I understand that when the mainstream media covers immigration, it doesn’t often see it as an economic issue, but I can tell you, it is a very personal economic issue,” Cruz is heard saying as images of suit-sporting men and women are shown crossing the border. “And I will say, the politics of it would be very, very different if a bunch of lawyers or bankers were coming across the Rio Grande. Or if a bunch of people with journalism degrees were coming over and driving down the wages in the press. Then we would see stories about the economic calamity that is befalling our nation.”

Cruz then closes by promising to “triple the Border Patrol” and “build a wall that works” as a soundtrack befitting an epic plays in the background. Tuesday’s ad is markedly different from the TV ad released by the Cruz campaign on Monday, which featured a softer spoken Cruz wearing a light blue sweater describing America as “off track.”

The Texas senator continues a swing through Iowa on Tuesday ahead of the Hawkeye State’s caucuses next month. Cruz ranks first in the Washington Examiner‘s newest GOP presidential power rankings.
