Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro endorsed Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton at the Latinos for Hillary kickoff event in San Antonio.
Castro, a former mayor of San Antonio and brother of a prominent Hispanic member of Congress, is thought to be on the short list for Clinton’s possible vice president, if she wins the nomination. During the event, Castro pledged to campaign for Clinton and help her win Texas’ 38 electoral votes.
“In 2016 the Latino community is going to take a critical role in electing our next president, so you couldn’t have picked a better city to kick off Latinos for Hillary than right here in the Alamo City,” Castro told the roaring crowd.

During her subsequent speech, Clinton positioned herself to the left on immigration reform, copying Martin O’Malley’s line of referring to illegal immigrants as “New Americans” and pledging to act on comprehensive immigration reform if Congress does not.
“Without immigrants the U.S. would be less prosperous less strong and far less interesting … but unfortunately not everyone agrees with me,” Clinton said, while revving up the already enthusiastic crowds.
Earlier in the day, while speaking with U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President Javier Palmarez, Clinton expressed her high esteem for Castro, stating that she would consider him as a running mate or for any position in her cabinet.
“Well I think very highly of him and I am thrilled to have his endorsement today,” Clinton said when asked if she would pick Castro as her running mate. “So I am really going to look hard at him for anything, because he is really good.”
