Loathe as we are to take the bait on White House efforts to distract from the horrors of the Afghanistan crisis it created, U.S. Army Capt. Erin Brymer’s story is just too good not to share.
Three children have been born to Afghan refugees lucky enough to escape the region over the past few weeks. Two were born in German hospitals shortly after the refugees arrived. But one was born on a U.S. military plane just moments after it landed. The White House is referring to these three as the Afghanistan “baby count.”
Brymer, the nurse who helped deliver the baby born on the U.S. military plane, said something about the birth that describes the way a lot of people feel about the humanitarian crisis in general: “We were expecting the worst, but hoping for the best.”
Thankfully, Brymer witnessed the best possible scenario become a reality. The plane landed before the woman gave birth, allowing the military medical team to come on board and assist. Brymer said she and the other nurses were prepared for a medical emergency, but the Afghan woman’s delivery ended up being “picture perfect.”
“It was the coolest moment of my life,” Brymer said afterward.
Hopefully, the U.S. will not need to invade and occupy another country for 20 years before Brymer has her next coolest moment.
