New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s Monday response to Fox News’ Greta van Susteren about the country’s 12 million illegal aliens sounded like he was reading from Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s script.
Cruz, who was repeatedly asked about amnesty last week in an interview with Van Susteren, had refused to share details about his plans for millions in the U.S. illegally.
Christie, working the campaign trail alongside Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan in New Hampshire, told Van Susteren he would not talk about legalization until he was able to address other issues in U.S. immigration policy, including securing the border.
“Politicians make promises for things that are well off in the distance when they don’t know whether they can accomplish the first things they can do,” said Christie, who is ranked fifth in the Washington Examiner’s presidential power rankings.
Van Susteren prodded for details, asking about the governor’s approach to U.S.-born children of parents who are illegally in the country.
“It’s 12 million people in a country of 330 million. We have a lot of other problems in this country that are a heck of a lot bigger,” Christie said.
